In association with JCKC Law, and with a shared ethos and speciality in the same practice areas, the Chambers of James Corbett KC is the vehicle through which James provides legal services in England and Wales and internationally.

James has rights of audience before every court in England and Wales in relation to all proceedings.

In addition to receiving instructions from solicitors and other licensed professions under the Licensed Access scheme, James is also authorised by the BSB to undertake Public Access work and to conduct litigation in England and Wales in accordance with the Code of Conduct of the Bar of England and Wales.

Representative Cases

Koonmen v. Bender, Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (Anguilla Circuit), 2002. Appeared for the successful trustees of an employee benefit trust on the first ever application in the Eastern Caribbean for a Beddoe order and on a subsequent application to surrender the trustees’ discretion to the court.

De Joria and anr v. Osco-Bingeman and anr, Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (Court of Appeal), April 2006. Appeared for the successful claimants at trial and on appeal on a question of interpretation of a pre-emption clause in a will which would, if applicable, determine entitlement to ownership of one of the world’s most successful brands of ultra-premium liquor.

 

An ICC commercial arbitration in New York, 2010, between international telecommunications companies. Appeared as counsel in a dispute arising out of a distributorship and intellectual property-sharing agreement.

 

An ICC commercial arbitration in London, 2011. Appeared as leading counsel in a dispute between Kuwait- and US-based parties about the terms of an international distributorship agreement.

 

Northern Mariana Islands Government v. Millard and Millard, Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands. 2014 (1) CILR 342. Appeared for the successful appellants on a question of whether the respondents were entitled to petition for their own bankruptcy where they were not insolvent.

 

Chevron Corporation v. De Leon and Torvia Ltd, Supreme Court of Gibraltar. 2013-14 Gib LR 431. Appeared for Chevron in its successful opposition to an application by a litigation funder to strike out proceedings alleging actionable conspiracy between the funder and funded parties.

 

Chevron Corporation v. De Leon and others, Supreme Court of Gibraltar. 2015 Gib LR 53. Appeared for Chevron on an application for Norwich Pharmacal orders against a litigation funder and associated entities.

 

Re Baha Mar Ltd and related entities, Supreme Court of The Bahamas, 2016. Represented Baha Mar Ltd and related entities in litigation with the Bahamas Government and Chinese state-owned banks and construction companies over the largest hotel resort development in the Caribbean (with sums in excess of US$3 billion in issue).

 

Fan v. Aquapoint LP, Grand Court of the Cayman Islands (Financial Services Division), June 2022. Appeared for the respondent on a petition for just and equitable winding up of a Cayman-registered Exempted Limited Partnership (with sums in excess of US$500 million in issue).
